ravel the world with your students!
Multicultural stories from Africa, Asia, Europe and America.
from Sept 29 to October 31.

Storyteller Priscilla Howe will be visiting Brazil, sharing exciting stories from different cultures with students in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Where is Priscilla Howe from?
Priscilla grew up in the states of Rhode Island and Vermont and has lived in Belgium, Bulgaria, Connecticut, New York and Kansas as an adult. She now makes her home in Lawrence, KS.

How will her stories benefit
students in Brazil?
Students’ imaginations soar as Priscilla tells stories that address universal themes, such as bravery, kindness, humor and sorrow. Priscilla introduces listeners to unusual stories from various cultures, using her words, voice, body and gestures to create images that remain in the imagination. Students often can be heard repeating lines from her stories for many days after Priscilla’s sessions.

What kind of audience is
this activity aimed at?
Priscilla adapts to the audience, regulating speed and changing vocabulary to ensure that students understand and interact with the stories. She is able to choose the right story for the right audience. Priscilla has performed in Belgium, Germany and Bulgaria for students who are studying English as a second language, so she understands the challenges and the fun of ESL audiences. She speaks clearly and a little more slowly than usual. The program for full English schools can be prepared on the basis of a native level of English.

Who is Priscilla Howe?
A former children's librarian, Priscilla has been a storyteller since 1988, full-time since 1993. She tells stories all over the US and in Europe to kids and adults of all ages. Though she doesn’t have any children of her own, Priscilla has been called a “kid magnet”.

The trick to good storytelling Howe says, is capturing the audience's attention, whatever age the listeners might be.

Priscilla´s puppet Trixie introduces her and usually says goodbye at the end. She tells short four or five stories, mixed with songs and puppet hilarity. Stories tend to have audience participation—there are hand motions, songs and chants built into many of the stories that she tells. Priscilla uses the power of her voice, body, facial expressions and gestures to convey the story.     Priscilla's ridiculous puppets introduce the program to children age 6 to 8; she asks the older children if they'd like to meet the puppets she brought "for the younger kids." The puppets suggest four or five stories for Priscilla to tell, which she does with plenty of audience participation and at least one song or story stretch in the middle. Students age 8 and up are invited to ask questions about stories, storytelling, puppets or even about the storyteller herself.

Priscilla lets the students know that she´s going to tell them stories that she doesn´t tell to younger children. Unless she´s telling “Tristan and Iseult,” she begins with a story that is a little bit gory or gruesome—(students of this age love that) and this indicates to them that she respects their maturity. She tells four or five stories, usually including one from her own life. She likes to have five minutes at the end for questions.

Stories: Priscilla tells a mixture of folktales from around the world, literary stories and her own original stories. She finds many of her stories in books at the library, some from other storytellers and some from her own life. Priscilla estimates she has a mental storehouse of 100 to 150 stories that she can draw upon for performances. Below are just a few examples from different story collections.
