June Peters

Storyteller & Musician

June Peters is one of the top women storytellers performing in the UK at the moment. She is a versatile storyteller whose rich voice and musical talents make her work riveting, moving and memorable. Her appeal is wide - she has performed for tiny children, for restless teenagers, for students, for adults. She tells tales from countless cultures from all over the world and specializes in participatory stories.

The Times Educational Supplement, reviewing one of June's sessions, says,
“Her method was distinctly collaborative. In one story the children were encouraged to imitate strange noises in a house. In the other, she asked for volunteers to join in a dance. Her style was direct, intimate, inclusive.”

  What does June do, exactly?

1. Interactive Storytelling Sessions
In a session June will tell a number of stories combined with songs, riddles, rhymes and music. She usually does 40 to 60 minute long sessions.

2. Story Fair
Children and teachers love this day. The Story Fair involves older children hearing, learning, rehearsing and, finally, retelling stories to younger children.

How is Storytelling different than Theatre?

One of the great advantages of storytelling is that the tellers can tell different stories, they are not tied to a script as in theatre. As the storyteller adapts to the audience, there is no need to prepare students.

June adapts to the audience, regulating speed and changing vocabulary to ensure that students understand and interact with the stories. She is able to choose the right story for the right audience.

What kind of audience are these activities aimed at?

June has experience with incredibly diverse audiences and levels of English comprehension, for example:

Escola Americana de Campinas (American English)
The Grange School Chile (British English)
Fundación Nuevo Marymount, Bogotá (all girls)
Pilgrims' BsAs (all boys)
Colombo Americano, Bogotá (mixed)
Markham Peru (full English school)
Cultura Inglesa Sao Paulo (language academy) Imnaculado Corazón, Lima (religious, Catholic)
Liessin School, Rio de Janeiro (religious, Jewish)
Villa Devoto School, Bs As (non religious)

How did June's sessions benefit Villa Devoto School in Bs As?

“My students learnt vocabulary, rhymes and they have had the chance to listen to an English native speaker and enjoy good storytelling."
Ruth Fraga de García Laborde – Primary headmistress

And how did they benefit Sidarta School in Sao Paulo?

“A imagem de June e de sua interação com as crianças está guardado em nossos corações...Momentos de magia que não serão esquecidos, tenho certeza!”
Carmen Hester - Headmistress
